For those of you having trouble setting up your kick drum mics, here’s a little tip.  Extreme Isolation Headphones.  These little things are great.  Route the kick drum signal back into these head phones as your setting up your kick and have the drummer place only the kick drum.  Now you can move the microphone around and find the sweet spot with very little outside noise to potentially mess with your setup process.  I find it extremely easy to find the perfect spot for my mic every time.

By the way, you can use this little technique with any microphone not just on your kick drum mic.  It’s an awesome way to isolate and test placement.
